Perched on the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier and beloved by generations, this jewel-box aquarium had been updated over the years by volunteers’ hard work and good intentions. A generous memorial donation was made to renovate the aquarium to modern standards without compromising its inherent charm.
Maximizing exhibit space and updating the aquatic systems were the highest priority and the most challenging in such a small footprint. The building’s round shape informed the axial circulation. A new mezzanine gallery increases exhibit space and creates additional room for a shark tank, larger touch tank and support spaces on the main level. Interactive media is featured throughout.
With its expansive ocean view, floor-to-ceiling tanks and immersive exhibits, this small aquarium now features hands-on learning spaces worthy of its big mission. As the educational facility for the non-profit, Oceanographic Teaching Station, the revamped Roundhouse Aquarium welcomes students and visitors to become better stewards of their fragile Pacific neighbor.
